Learn the basics of lace knitting by making a simple shawlette with just one skein of sock yarn. The Pebble Beach Shawlette pattern, beautifully written by Helen Stewart, is an ideal first lace adventure. If you just do what the pattern says, you end up with a lovely scarf/shawlette. I like it in a gradient-dyed fingering-weight yarn, but I have seen beautiful examples in solid colors or tonal colorways. You will not finish the shawl in class, of course, but you will have a firm grasp of how to do all the steps you need, up to and including the pretty bind-off.

Supplies:

  • Purchase the Pebble Beach Shawl available on Ravelry at https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pebble-beach-shawl. Please note: the pattern includes several sizes. We will be making the shawlette.
  • 100g skein of sock/fingering weight yarn totaling approximately 400 m/437 yds. If you want to make a larger size, check the pattern and be sure you have enough yarn. Gradients work well with this pattern, and so do solids and semi-solids. A variegated yarn with high contrast and short color runs may not be your best choice, because it will tend to obscure the stitch work.
  • Needles: One 32- or 40-inch circular needle US size 6 (4 mm) or size you need to obtain a gauge of 18 sts/28 rows = 10cm (4") in eyelet lace stitch after blocking. Because the eyelet lace is one of the things you’ll learn in class, we are going to just wing it here -- If you know you are a loose knitter, go down a size or even two. If you know you are a tight knitter, go up. It would be best to bring several different sizes just in case. (You can start the piece on a 24-inch needle, so if that’s what you have in the size you need, that will also work.)
  • Standard knitter’s toolkit items: scissors, measuring tape, stitch markers, pencil and paper, sewing-up needle, etc.

Homework:

  • Print the pattern or make sure it is downloaded onto the device you plan to use. If your yarn is the kind that comes in a pretty, twisted hank, please wind it into a ball before class.
  • Cast on 34 stitches.
  • Work 4 rows in garter stitch.
  • Do not bind off (you can move the stitches to a holder, of course). We will use this little swatch to practice the picot bindoff.
