Knitting A Contemporary Classic: The Musselburgh Hat with Elizabeth Durand (9/26/25 6:00 PM)
With nearly 35,000 projects posted on Ravelry, it seems there must be no one left who has not made the Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague. . .but I know you’re out there. This hat is simple in style, double thick for warmth, and offers unlimited chances for personalization. Sure, you could make the whole thing black if you want to – but imagine the possibilities with self-striping yarns! And – although it looks wonderful in sock yarn, this hat also can be made with sport weight, DK, or light worsted weight yarn, for those of you who are averse to the skinny stuff. (The pattern can be adapted to any gauge from 5 sts/inch to 9 sts/inch.) It works for anybody, and is a highly desirable gift. You won’t finish your hat in class, but you will make a good start, and by the time you leave, you will know everything you need to know to finish the project.

Supplies:
- Pattern: You must purchase the pattern. It is available on Ravelry at https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/musselburgh. Ysolda has generously given us a discount code for 20% off the cost of the pattern. Once you register for the class, that code will be sent to you.
- Yarn: One 100g skein of sockweight yarn (approx. 400 – 450 yds)
You can use DK for this pattern, but remember that the hat is four layers thick when the brim is folded up, so a hat made with DK weight yarn will be quite thick and very warm. If you plan to use DK, check the pattern for the size you plan to make and the amount of yarn required for a gauge of 5 or 5.5 stitches per inch.
-
Needles:
- One set double-pointed needles (DPNs) 2 or 3 sizes larger than you would use for the yarn you have chosen. (For example, if you usually use US size 1 (2.25 mm) for socks; for a Musselburgh hat, you would need a US size 3 (3.25 mm). If you are using DK yarn, plan accordingly for a larger needle size.)
- One 16-inch circular needle in the same size as the DPNs listed above.
- If you plan to use magic loop, a 32-inch needle in the appropriate size and also a set of DPNs in the same size.
- Standard knitter’s toolkit items: Four stitch markers, one distinctly different from the others to mark beginning/end of round; tape measure, sewing-up needle, scissors, paper and pencil, etc.
Homework: Print the pattern or make sure it is downloaded onto the device you plan to use. If your yarn is the kind that comes in a pretty, twisted hank, please wind it into a ball before class.
If you have never knit a very small circumference in the round, please practice. Cast on 20 stitches – on either DPNs or magic loop, whichever you plan to use for your hat – and knit a tube several inches long until you get comfortable with the technique. You will be happy you did this.
