Learn how to knit cables, or improve your cabling skills, while knitting Helen Stewart’s elegant Kindling Mitts. You’ll learn how to work cables using a cable needle, and those who are adventurous will also learn how do it without a cable needle. Although it won’t be possible to complete the project in class, we’ll have reviewed every step in the process so you can finish confidently at home.

Date/Time: Friday, September 25, 2026 6:00-9:00 PM

Supplies:

  • 100-g skein of worsted weight yarn, totaling approximately 210–220 yds. Lighter colors in a solid or tonal will show your cables best. Avoid heavily variegated yarns, because they will obscure the texture. (Also, I know black mitts would be elegant, but it’s really hard to see your stitches while you work the cables.)
  • DPNs or a 32- or 40-inch circular needle (if you want to use magic loop) in the size you need to get 18 stitches/4 inches in stockinette stitch. Start swatching with a size 6 (4 mm).
  • Cable needle in your preferred style
  • Copy of the Cabled Kindling Mitts pattern. Available on Ravelry.
  • Standard knitter’s toolkit items: Four stitch markers, one distinctly different from the others to mark beginning/end of round; tape measure, sewing-up needle, scissors, paper and pencil, etc.

Homework:

Print the pattern or make sure it is downloaded onto the device you plan to use. If your yarn is the kind that comes in a pretty, twisted hank, please wind it into a ball before class.

Choose which of the 2 sizes you want to make. Using your project yarn, cast on 32 stitches for the smaller size or 36 stitches for the larger size and work in k2, p2 ribbing for 15 rounds. This will be the cuff of the mitt; knitting it ahead of time lets us get right to the fun part.

Skill Level:  Confident Beginner: Beginner level skills plus increase, decrease, and follow simple patterns. Experience working in the round will be helpful, but is not required.
