Dorset buttons were thread-decorated buttons made by artisans in the UK, from between 1622 and 1850 , prior to the invention of machine-made buttons. This workshop will focus on the basic "wheel" Dorset button that can be made as plain or as fancy you like. The technique starts with a plastic ring--in the preferred size for the finished button--which gets embellished with yarns or embroidery threads or even beads to make a tiny work of art. Dorset buttons can be made with leftover yarns, crochet thread or embroidery floss to match your cardigans or jackets, or made into earrings or necklaces. make them just for the fun of creating a pretty object! Students will make at least one button in class and will leave with the basic instructions on how to make more.
