Helping Others
All Knitters' Day Out participants are asked to donate a handmade knit or crochet item as part of their Knitters' Day Out registration. "Keeping Kids Warm" has been part of the KDO mission since its inception. This year, we are offering you another opportunity to make an impact with your knitting or crocheting. In 2019, we are collecting items for two worthy causes: Keeping Kids Warm, and Knitted Knockers.
Keeping Kids Warm

"Keeping Kids Warm" has been part of the KDO mission since its inception. Each year, through your skill and generosity, 300-400 hats, mittens, and scarves have been donated to agencies that help clothe kids in need. Organizations receiving donations have included St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mechanicsburg, Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, and Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. You may use a pattern as simple or complex as you like. Keep in mind that items sized for small children should not include choking hazards. When you arrive, you'll find there is a large 'crib' where you may leave your contribution.

Knitted Knockers

"Knitted Knockers" are a knitted or crocheted breast prosthesis for women who have had mastectomies or other breast procedures.  Knitted Knockers are donated to breast cancer survivors who need a soft, comfortable breast prosthesis. All Knockers donated at KDO will be sent to the Knitted Knockers organization for distribution; please visit their site to find out more about this wonderful organization and see testimonials from recipients.

If you are interested in donating a Knitted Knocker, please

  1. use the approved patterns from the Knitted Knockers website,
  2. use an approved yarn (you can find the list here),
  3. attach the yarn label.

The approved yarns have been tested and proven to be washable, breathable, durable, and soft. The Knockers don't need to be stuffed — in fact, unstuffed is better since we'll be mailing them to the organization.

With Gratitude
very special thank you goes out to the following yarn companies for their extreme generosity and support of Knitters’ Day Out 2019:

  • Kelbourne Woolens for graciously providing yarn to every single KDO student!

  •  CocoKnits for contributing accessories to a substantial number of students.

Additional Acknowledgments

Many thanks to the following companies and individuals that donated door prizes to KDO 2019. Please reach out to each of these businesses and individuals to thank them for their support and generosity.
