Featured Guest Teachers 2008
Gwen Bortner has been teaching knitting and designing knitwear since the early 80’s. Her math
background made designing and writing patterns a natural extension of her love of fiber and knitting
in particular. But Gwen’s greatest passion is sharing her love of knitting with others and helping
knitters of all levels move to the next level of their hobby.

Merike Saarniit started knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc as a child. Her Barbie dolls had quite the
interesting wardrobes. Her parents came from Estonia and she was raised Estonian-American.
Merike teach workshops in spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing at Stitches events (East, West,
MidWest, Camps), at
John C. Campbell Folk School, and privately sponsored workshops. Her
schedule is on a page at
www.Liisu.com. She is currently working on a book for XRX.

Kathy Zimmerman is an accomplished knitter, teacher, and nationally-recognized knitwear
designer — is the owner of Kathy’s Kreations, a yarn shop specializing in quality handknitting yarns
and accessories. Her designs have appeared in Knitter’s, Knit Simple, Interweave Knits and
Vogue Knitting magazines. Kathy is a freelance designer for Classic Elite Yarns, Fiber Trends,
Reynolds Yarn, Kraemer Yarns and Nashua
Handknits. She is best known for her designs featuring textures andcabled stitchwork patterns.

Greetings Knitters!!!

The Knitters’ Day Out Committee is pleased to bring you the 24th annual
Knitters’ Day Out on Friday September 25 and Saturday September 26, 2009.

Gwen Bortner, Merike Saarniit, Kathy Zimmerman are our guest teachers
this year. You can take only ONE class with a guest teacher, so consider your
choices carefully. Our guest teachers will teach Saturday only.

In addition, we have first-time volunteer teachers and long-time KDO veterans
teaching for us this year. All have something special to share with you in classes
for knitters from beginners to experts. If you know someone who would like to
learn to knit, consider a gift of registration to the Beginner Knitting class. Share
your love of knitting!

We offer classes Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.
However, each registrant is limited to taking TWO classes. Come both days
and treat yourself to a special knitting weekend away.

We have tried to address some of your continuing concerns this year. To
increase shopping time and to reduce lunchtime cafeteria congestion, some
morning classes will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 and others from 9 to 12.
Likewise, afternoon classes will run from 1-4 or 1:30 to 4:30. Lunch will be
served from 11:30 to 1:30. The cost of registration remains $45. However, as
you all know, the price of food has increased dramatically in the last year. We
are offering our buffet lunch at cost for $12.50 when you include payment
with your registration. On the day of KDO the price increases to $14, so
plan ahead and save.

Friday evening classes (6 to 9pm) were a huge success last year, and will con-
tinue in 2009. Friday classes, registration, and the vendor market will all be in
the same building.

We thank you for previous donations for Caps for Kids. Once again we ask you to
bring a knitted cap to donate to this cause. You can also enter your cap in the Caps
for Kids contest. Three winners will each receive $10 to spend at the KDO mar-
ket. Registration will remain open until August 22, 2009. Classes fill rapidly so check
to see what classes are still open our website at www.knittersdayout.org. Other
information about the event will also be posted there.

See you in September, and meanwhile…happy knitting!!!
